They’d stopped using their names to avoid being unmasked, and she couldn’t remember the last time anyone had even whispered her birth name. She was simply Freedom now. Most had a symbolic imask of some sort and would even from time to time wear it. The “i” was the result of people feeling a need to hide from others on the internet as they expressed their concerns about the new government. The “mask” came from the rhetoric of some that focused on the intelligence agencies’ revealing or unmasking the identities of citizens while in the pursuit of foreign enemies. It was becoming less taboo for a person to create a mask for someone else, but for now people who wanted an actual mask were expected to create their own.
